Que.: What is freight forwarding?

Freight forwarding is a service used by companies that deal in international or multi-national import and export. While the freight forwarder doesn't actually move the freight itself, it acts as an intermediary between the client and various transportation services. Sending products from one international destination to another can involve a multitude of carriers, requirements and legalities. A freight forwarding service handles the considerable logistics of this task for the client, relieving what would otherwise be a formidable burden.
Freight forwarding services guarantee that products will get to the proper destination by an agreed upon date, and in good condition. The freight forwarding service utilizes established relationships with carriers of all kinds, from air freighters and trucking companies, to rail freighters and ocean liners. Freight forwarding services negotiate the best possible price to move the product along the most economical route by working out various bids and choosing the one that best balances speed, cost and reliability.

What is a Freight Forwarder?

The best description of a freight forwarder is a "travel agent for freight". We take the information you give us on your time frames and equipment needs and we arrange for the gear to be at the place you need it to be, when you need it to be there. We try to take all the guess work and headache out of the transport side of it for you. We make all the necessary arrangements with all of the appropriate government documentation and paperwork as required. We set up the pickup and delivery of your equipment to meet the time frames of use. Basically all you, the client, have to do be sure the gear is packed and ready to go, we do the rest. Whether is one keyboard or 50,000 kilos of equipment, we do it all.

What is logistics?

As a management discipline, logistics plans, organizes implements and controls the flow of goods and information from procurement via production to distribution. Numerous extra services, such as repacking, scanning, customs clearance, track & trace or IT co-ordination, often have to be provided in addition to the pure transportation of goods. The value chain from procurement to distribution is called the supply chain. The work of a logistics company may involve only a small part of this supply chain (starting with pure transport services) or a larger part of this chain offering complex, IT-supported co-ordination or the co-ordination and control of the entire chain for a customer, known as supply chain management (SCM). SCM is the highest stage of value-added and the most complicated logistics task.

Does my shipment need any special packaging for freight shipping?

Yes your freight needs to be packaged and or palletized, it is the shippers responsibility for packaging the goods. Shrink wrap, corrugated boxing, palletizing and strapping or banding is the most common type of packaging for the freight industry.

Do I need to know the weight of my goods?

In most cases you can estimate your weight on the bill of lading. But be aware that the carrier can and will adjust the weight, which will determine your final cost. The final weight is known as the "chargeable weight". For Air Freight, chargeable weight may be the dimensional weight if greater than the gross weight of the shipment.
